Rare child's mourning dress. Approx measurements are: waist - 13.5", pit to pit - 12", shoulder - 11.5", sleeve -15", length - 28"
Made of black crape which was the fabric typically used in periods of mourning. Has cream colored collar and wrist cuffs. This was very typical of the Victorian Era. In the late 1800's, there was controversy over whether it was healthy to put children in fully mourning. Usually made from crape, it was considered by some as too depressing. Despite this, women were pressured by family and friends to clothe the little ones in black, especially for a departed father. This particular piece is in good condition for the age...some discoloration on collar and cuffs. It is a rare historical piece of Edwardian times.
